Penguins trade John Marino to Devils for Ty Smith, pick

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded defenceman John Marino to the New Jersey Devils for defenceman Ty Smith and a 2023 third-round pick.

Marino, 25, appeared in 189 games for Pittsburgh over three seasons, scoring 10 goals and registering 54 assists for 64 points. He excelled in a top-four role, averaging 20:33 of ice time and accumulating only 51 penalty minutes in his time with the Penguins.

The North Easton, Massachusetts native was selected by the Edmonton Oilers with the 154th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. He was acquired by the Penguins in July 2019 for a 2021 sixth-round pick.

He is currently in the second year of a six-year, $26.4 million ($4.4 million AAV) he signed in January 2021.

Smith, 22, registered seven goals and 36 assists for 43 points in 114 games over two seasons with the Devils. The Lloydminster, Alberta native was named to the 2020-2021 NHL All-Rookie team after accumulating 23 points in 48 games.

Smith was selected by New Jersey with the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. He is currently entering the final of a three-year, $3.975 million entry-level contract.
