Pep Guardiola set to reward Manchester City star with £40k pay rise, after blocking Chelsea approach
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is set to offer centre-back Nathan Ake a new contract this summer, according to reports.
The long-term deal will include a significant pay rise for the Dutch international, with his wages set to increase from £80,000 to £120,000 per week.
Ake has enjoyed his best season to date since signing from Bournemouth in 2020, so City are keen to reward the defender.
The Dutchman took some time to solidify his spot in Guardiola’s starting XI, but this season he has been one of the Premier League champion’s most important players.
The 28-year-old has made 26 appearances in all competitions for City this term, helping his side to nine clean sheets, as well as contributing two goals.
According to a report from the Daily Star, Ake’s dedicated approach even when struggling for minutes at the Etihad impressed Guardiola, who blocked Chelsea’s attempt to buy him last summer.
In particular, Ake’s performance in City’s title-race clash against Arsenal on Wednesday gained him plenty of praise, especially for the way he kept electric winger Bukayo Saka largely quiet.
There are still two years on the Dutchman’s current deal, so the fact that they are willing to increase his salary now is a testament to how important he is to the team.
Ake set for deserved reward amid Man City controversy
Ake began his career in England at Chelsea, after signing for the Blues from Dutch giants Feyenoord at the age of 15.
However, the defender made just seven senior appearances for Chelsea, despite having successful loan spells at Reading, Watford and Bournemouth, before joining the latter on a permanent deal for a then-club record fee of £20m.
Ake, who has made 34 appearances for the Netherlands, made over 100 starts for the Cherries as they battled to remain in the Premier League under Eddie Howe.
Now, since joining City in 2020, he has featured 66 times, playing his part in two Premier League title-winning campaigns in 2020/21 and 2021/22.
Given the controversy surrounding the club after allegedly breaking financial fair play rules over a nine-year period, it is important that they tie their best players down to new deals sooner rather than later.
Erling Haaland has already been linked with a shock summer exit amid the crisis, which would come as a major blow after the Norweigan has scored 26 goals in 23 league appearances this season.
Indeed, while it remains to be seen what the outcome of the Premier League’s charges will be, one potential ramification could be a transfer ban, so keeping the players they have is important as the speculation continues.
But, Ake looks set to pen his extend his stay at the Etihad, in a deal which will keep him in Manchester for years to come, if the reports are to be believed.
