Aberdeen have granted Peter Leven the opportunity to speak with St Johnstone as they seek a new manager.

The Saints recently sacked Craig Levein from his position with the club sitting 10th in the Premiership and they are now on the lookout for his permanent replacement having had Andy Kirk in interim charge since Levein left. Scott Brown was believed to be one of the prime targets at McDiarmid Park but the Celtic hero opted instead to sign an extension at Ayr United.

Now the club have moved to speak with Leven and Jimmy Thelin, the Dons boss, has confirmed they have allowed their first-team coach to speak with Saints about potentially taking over. The Swede admits Leven now has a "decision to make".

Leven has held the position as caretaker head coach at Pittodrie in recent seasons including after Barry Robson was binned last term and Neil Warnock departed from his short stint.

He led the club to a desperately close penalty shootout defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final and won them valuable points in the top flight.

Larne's Tiernan Lynch is also believed to be on their radar as they seek a new gaffer quickly with Celts coming to town on Saturday evening.
