PGA Championship 2022 LIVE: Leaderboard and latest updates as Rory McIlroy sets pace and Tiger Woods falters

PGA Championship 2022 LIVE: Leaderboard and latest updates as Rory McIlroy sets pace and Tiger Woods falters

Rory McIlroy finally found the fast start he has been craving in a major to leave playing partner Tiger Woods trailing in his wake in the 104th US PGA Championship.

Since winning the last of his four majors in the 2014 US PGA, McIlroy had been a combined 35 over par in the first round of golf’s four biggest tournaments, his latest effort being a one-over-par 73 in April’s Masters.

But, perhaps inspired by being paired with Woods and Jordan Spieth – who is chasing the career grand slam in Tulsa – it was a different story on the opening day at Southern Hills, where Woods won the 13th of his 15 majors in 2007.

McIlroy carded seven birdies and two bogeys in an opening 65 to set the clubhouse target on five under par, a shot ahead of the American pair Will Zalatoris and Tom Hoge.

Woods had played his first five holes in two under par but struggled from then on and admitted his right leg – which he feared could have to be amputated following last year’s car crash – was not “feeling as good as I would like”. The 46-year-old eventually signed for a four-over-par 74, with Spieth returning a 72.

PGA Championship tee times (BST)

  • McIlroy (-5) leads in clubhouse with opening round 65

  • Woods struggles on last nine and finishes (+4)

  • Scheffler, Rahm and Morikawa tee off for evening session

Day One of the US PGA Championship is winding down with Rory McIlroy leading the way after a barmstorming first round 65. American duo Will Zalatoris and Tom Hoge are one back and there are still a few players making moves out on the course.

South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel is two-under thru the front nine and world no.1 Scottie Scheffler (-1) was going well before picking up a bogey on the 12th.

The guys out for this late session have found it more difficult to attack the pins and the wind has picked up in Tulsa as conditions have gotten more challenging. Any score under par will be a big achievement but it seems likely that Roroy McIlroy will be the leader overnight.

Our live coverage will return tomorrow for Day Two where we’ll see if McIlroy can increase his lead.

Matt Fitzpatrick navigates the ninth with a safe par 4 to head out in 34 one under par. It’s even better news for playing partner Charl Schwartzel who rolls his third shot in for a birdie to move two-under thru nine.

Sergio Garcia, the third member of this trio, makes it five pars in a row for a level par 35.

Further back in the field Aaron Wise (-2) slides in his third birdie of the round to move within three of the lead. It’s a fine turnaround for the American after an opening hole bogey.

Matt Fitzpatrick has dropped down to (-1) after a bogey on the seventh but he’s responded well with a par on eight.

Charl Schwartzel (-1) has started to go backwards though as he takes a four on the par-3 and drops a shot.

The fist pump comes out from Collin Morikawa on the par-3 11th after he leaves his birdie putt on the inside left edge of the hole and watches it drop. He’s back to evens for the day.

Scottie Scheffler gets his dropped shot right back on the next hole with a birdie three on the 10th as he starts the back nine.

Jon Rahm is safely home for par but Collin Morikawa’s run of pars comes to an end as the American makes a bogey after finding the sand.

Ian Poulter’s (+1) drops a shot of the fifth and joins Tommy Fleetwood at one over par for the round.

Fleetwood is an Everton fan and they’ve just beaten Crystal Palace 3-2 at Goodison Park to avoid relegation. I wonder if that news has filtered through to him yet.

Thursday 19 May 2022 21:45 , Michael Jones

Starting his round on the 10th Lucas Herbert has birdied 10, 13 and 14 to take the Australian to three-under par thru five. He joins Matt Kuchar and Abraham Ancer in the tie for fourth place.

Eagle! Scottie Scheffler’s underway! His superb second shot on the fifth left him with an 12-foot uphill putt, slightly curling in from the right. As soon as he hit it he knew it was going to drop and it does. He moves to (-2).

Jon Rahm (-1) follows him in with a birdie.

PGA Championship

Lovely from Scheffler who finds the middle of the green on five with his second. He’ll have a putt for eagle to move into the red and should pick up a birdie at the very least.

PGA Championship

Thursday 19 May 2022 20:41 , Michael Jones

Justin Thomas’ (-1) approach to the fifth is a good one. Chipped high and catching the back spin on the second bounce to stop the ball within a few feet of the hole.

Brooks Koepka (+3) is having a tough time. He’s picked up three bogeys in the opening six holes.

PGA Championship

Thursday 19 May 2022 20:36 , Michael Jones

Eagle! There has been a few cracking shots from the fairways today but this one is right up there. South Africa’s Justin Harding flights an iron into the green from 181 yards and sets the crowd roaring as it rolls in for a two!

He’s back to evens after a couple of early bogeys.

PGA Championship

Thursday 19 May 2022 20:25 , Michael Jones

Patrick Cantlay (+1) is having an up and down day. After a par on the first he’s gone bogey-birdie-bogey. A skake of the head from the 30-year-old American shows he hasn’t quite clicked with the course yet.

Dustin Johnson (+1) is steadying the ship after a bogey on the second. He’s followed up with some decent putts and a couple of pars.

Saudi breakaway league ‘would damage game hugely’, Tom Watson claims

Thursday 19 May 2022 20:00 , Michael Jones

A breakaway golf league funded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign investment fund would “damage the game hugely”, according to eight-time major champion Tom Watson.

The LIV Golf Invitational Series, spearheaded by Greg Norman, will host its first event at the Centurion Club next month, with top players such as Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia set to defy the PGA Tour and DP World Tour and compete for the £20 million total prize fund.

The PGA Tour has informed players that it will not grant releases to play in any of the eight events making up the series, with Norman promising to defend any player who faces sanctions for participating in the breakaway league.

Tiger Woods stopped by the Sky Sports screen to talk through his round and explained how it didn’t quite work in his iron play today saying:

“Physically I’ve felt better. Emotionally I’ve felt better too. It’s frustrating, I got off to a great start today, I did exactly what I needed to to start off the round but I did not keep it going. I hit a lot of bad iron shots and put myself in a lot of bad spots. Never really gave myself any birdie putts.

“I felt comfortable with the driver and hit a lot of fairways with it but from there it was not very good. Most of the bunker shots I hit were long but predominantly I hit bad iron shots and that’s not normally how I play. Today unfortunately that’s kind of what it was.

He was asked about what his recovery process looks like to get ready for tomorrow and added:

“Lots of treatment, lots of ice. I’ll start the recovery process as soon as I’m done here.”

The 18th hole is beast. There’s only been one birdie here all day and it’s playing one shot higher than the rest.

Tiger Woods sends his par putt past the hole and slots in for bogey. He’s level after nine holes. Jordan Spieth (+2) drops another one, he was willing it into the hole but it curled wide.

Rory McIlroy (-4) will be overjoyed. He missed the fairway, missed the green and underhit his first putt. There’s a bit left to do but he sinks it for par. That’s a great save from the Northern Irishman.
