Dustin Johnson runs away with The Northern Trust, claims World No. 1 ranking
Sunday’s round at TPC Boston was essentially just a formality.
Dustin Johnson had the win wrapped up well before he stepped up to the first tee.
Johnson, after pushing to a 5-shot lead on Saturday, flew to 30 under on the week to win The Northern Trust by a whopping 11 strokes.
The win launched him up to No. 1 in the FedExCup standings and helped him reclaim the top spot in the World Golf Rankings for the first time in more than a year.

Johnson finished the day with an 8-under 63 after an eagle and four birdies on his front nine to solidify his spot atop the leaderboard. From there, he made a pair of birdies while cruising on the back nine — even while waiting through a weather delay in his final few holes — to pick up his second win of the season.
His 30 under tied the second-lowest score related to par posted in a 72-hole event on Tour since 1950. The 36-year-old is now in an incredible position headed into the final two FedExCup Playoffs events, starting next week with the BMW Championship in Chicago.
“This week, I played some really good golf. It was a lot of fun,” Johnson said on CBS after the win. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the FedExCp playoffs. Obviously, I got myself in a really good position going into East Lake and obviously next week, too. Next week is still a really big tournament, and I’m looking forward to going and playing Olympia Fields.”
Harris English came in second on Sunday at 19 under. Daniel Berger was right behind him at 18 under, and both Scottie Scheffler and Kevin Kisner tied for fourth.
A near-historic Friday sets up big run
Johnson’s big win is credited largely to a near-historic outing he had on Friday.
Johnson went 11 under through his first 11 holes in Round 2, and tied the lowest nine-hole score related to par in PGA Tour history. That, however, was where he stalled. Johnson closed with seven pars to finish the day with a 60, narrowly missing recording just the 13th sub-60 round in Tour history.
Somehow, though, his round wasn’t the best of the day.
Scheffler posted a 59 thanks to six birdies on the back nine, joining an elite class on Tour. Only Jim Furyk has shot a lower round, having posted a 58 at the Traveler’s Championship in 2016.
Johnson’s second round gave him a two-shot lead over the rest of the field headed into Saturday, which he quickly pushed to five after a third-round 64.
Tiger Woods’ strong finish
Though he was never in contention at The Northern Trust, Tiger Woods mounted a very strong finish on Sunday.
Woods started out his day with four straight birdies, and then made two more in his final three holes — he slipped and carded a bogey on No. 8 — on the front nine to post a 5-under 31. Thanks to nine straight pars on the back side, Woods finished with a 66 to bring him to 6 under on the week.

He was well behind Johnson, but his outing gave him a bit of momentum headed into next week’s BMW Championship — something he needs as he’s still outside of the qualifying mark for the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta.
“I felt like I hit the ball better,” Woods said, via ESPN. “I putted better. Everything was just cleaner and better today. It was good.
“Just wish I would have kept the round going a little bit more. I had a couple nice little eagle looks on the front nine … It could have been one of these really low rounds, but I’ll take 5 under.”
