Phil Neville trolled for bizarre World Cup commentary blunder as he forgets Uruguay has won trophy twice

Phil Neville has been trolled for a bizarre World Cup commentary blunder as he appeared to forget Uruguay has won the trophy twice.

Analysing their performance against Saudi Arabia the BBC pundit said the South American side “want to make sure they advance further than they have ever done before”.

Football fans were quick to remind the former Manchester United star that Uruguay have in fact won the competition twice, in 1930 and 1950.

Following the blunder on Wednesday, fan Paul Johnson wrote on Twitter: “Phil Neville not knowing Uruguay have won the World Cup has made my day,”

Another, named Stuart Wilson, said: “The ignorance of these English pundits is astonishing… Uruguay won the World Cup in 1930 & 1950 Phil.

And another fan wrote: “Phil Neville reckons Uruguay don't care about how they win games, they just want to progress further than they have ever done before.

“Safe to say Phil hasn't looked up the list of previous winners.”

Luis Suarez scored on his 100th appearance for Uruguay to earn a 1-0 win over Group A rivals Saudi Arabia and send his nation into the last 16.

He capped a century of international appearances with a poacher's effort to put his nation ahead after 23 minutes against Saudi Arabia.

As a result of the victory, Uruguay and hosts Russia are the first two teams to qualify for the knockout stages, with Egypt and Saudi Arabia heading home before the third matchday has even kicked in Group A.
