Philippe Clement talks Rangers team selection as double left-back pick airs tactical reasoning
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has named his side to face Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League in what is a huge game at Ibrox - and his decision to select both Ridvan and Jefte has aired surprise.
Rangers have made a superb start to their European campaign, and it's in continental competitions where they have shone especially in the past few years. The Europa League has been their happy place in recent times, and an expectant crowd will be hoping that they can win against the odds to plunge through to the knockout rounds.
But with two left-backs being named, Clement has defended his reasoning - and thinks that the pair can act against Ange Postecoglou's ultra-attacking lineup.
Speaking to Rangers TV before the game, the Belgian said: “We’re missing Danilo and [Ianis] Hagi as they’re not on the European list - and also with some players, I need to take care towards our game on Sunday for the cup final [vs Celtic]. So it was difficult to put your strongest team for this game, and also your strongest team for Sunday, so we had to make some changes there.
“Ridvan will play in front of Jefte in that role, he has a lot of attacking qualities but we need good defensive work on the sides, as they come a lot with their full-backs.
“Nedim [Bajrami] will play around Hamza [Igamane] in his preferred and best position, in the potion we bought ahi to play that role, but until now he has played on the left a lot, because Rabbi [Matondo] and Oscar [Cortes] were injured.”
