Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Williams had a scary moment during Monday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. In the eighth inning, Williams had to leave the game after getting hit in the face by a fly ball.

What happened?

With one out in the eighth inning, Matt Carpenter crushed a ball deep to right field. Williams ran back to the wall to make the play, but couldn’t get there in time to jump and make the play. As he braced himself on the wall to stop his momentum, the ball ricocheted off the wall and hit him directly in the nose.

How did Williams respond?

Williams gathered himself enough to pick up the ball and throw it back to the infield, which held a runner at third base. But his nose started bleeding almost immediately.

Williams eventually had to leave the game. He walked off the field holding a blood-stained towel against his face.

How did things play out with Williams out of the game?

The Cardinals managed to tie things up in the ninth to send the game to extras. They tacked on a run in the top of the 10th to take a one-run lead.

With two men on and the Phillies trailing by one, Aaron Altherr hit a liner that scored two runs to win the game for Philadelphia 6-5. Altherr replaced Williams in the contest.

What happens next for Williams?

The outfielder told Kapler he was “totally fine” after the game. If true, it appears Williams will avoid a major injury. He may get a day off or two, but it’s possible he’ll return to the lineup sooner than expected.
