Danny Mills has warned Kalvin Phillips that he will become “another squad player” at Manchester City if he leaves Leeds for the Premier League champions.

The England midfielder is reportedly open to joining City this summer, in a deal that will likely cost around £50m.

England have been taken to a European final by a ‘second-tier manager’, apparently

An offer is ‘imminent’ and Leeds are not expected to stand in Phillips’ way as they have already identified potential replacements.

However, former Leeds and City defender Mills has warned the 26-year-old, insisting that he will only play around 20 games next season as he expects him to play second fiddle to Spanish midfielder Rodri.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Mills said: “I think if he goes to Manchester City he becomes another squad player.

“He’ll probably play 20 games or so? He’s not Rodri’s standard yet, Rodri’s different class.

“I remember watching Rodri when he first came in to the football club and thinking ‘wow’.”

When asked if Phillips can step up to that level, Mills replied: “He can do.

“Undoubtedly we’ve seen him put in some fantastic performances, but we’ve seen it with Jack Grealish, going to Man City is another level.

“I remember when Rio Ferdinand left Leeds and went to Manchester United, we were doing well at the time at Leeds, but he went to United and he thought: ‘this is next level stuff’.

“Training was next level, there’s no messing about, there’s no 90 per cent performances in training, you have to be at it 100 per cent every single day, and that’s the difference.

“You’ll get away with things at teams slightly lower down the league table.

“It could be good for Phillips, but you’ve got to step up. If you don’t step up you’ll get found out very, very quickly.

“I’m not saying Kalvin Phillips will get found out because he’s a very good player, but going to Manchester City with the intensity and the expectation of having to win every single week is next level.”
