Not many players would be foolish enough to mock their opponents prior to an important league match.
Then again, perhaps it wasn't sheer foolishness on Lyon winger Memphis Depay's part, rather than misplaced confidence or maybe even arrogance. Perhaps a tweet mocking Ligue 1 rivals Lorient could have looked good if Lyon had beaten their opponents, but Depay looks damn silly now after his side fell to a 4-1 loss.
Such a brainless tweet could be forgiven if it came from a player of undoubted prestige with the ability to back up their talk, but the fact remains that Depay is a player who failed to make the grade at Manchester United and is now trying to rebuild his career at a club now unable to qualify for a Champions League spot next season.
You could imagine the uproar if Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil described Tottenham as a bunch of chickens or if Everton boss Ronald Koeman called Liverpool a pack of birds, so Depay is unsurprisingly facing justified ridicule for his ridiculous comment.
Also, Depay is certainly not the lion he is inferring he is in the tweet. The Netherlands international has an impressive five goals and three assists in 12 Ligue 1 matches but still has a long way to go in order to establish himself as the premier footballer he was tipped to be when plundering goals for PSV.
Corentin Tolisso grabbed the oponer for Lyon but goals from Majeed Waris, Sylvain Marveaux and a brace from Benjamin Moukandjo helped Lorient climb off the foot of the Ligue 1 table.
