Despite comments to the contrary, football still remains a physically imposing contact sport, and injuries are part and parcel of the game as a result.
Sometimes, though, injuries occur that make even the hardest football fan squirm and look away due to how truly shocking they are. Think ex-Arsenal star Eduardo's horror ankle break and you'll understand what we mean.
Spare a thought for Fenerbahce's Fernandao, then, who was the recipient of a absolutely sickening broken arm during his side's 3-2 loss to Konyaspor on Friday night.
The challenge with Konyaspor's keeper seemed fairly innocuous, but it's the way that Fernandao landed that really makes his arm twist in an unnatural way.
As evident by his teammates and the referee's reaction - not to mention Fernandao's own reaction; he started screaming! - the injury is absolutely horrendous. Medical staff quickly rushed onto the pitch to deal with the incident, before stretchering Fernandao from the field of play.
Here's hoping the 29-year-old makes a full recovery and can get back to playing the game he loves in due course.
