Cody Gakpo trained with his new Liverpool team-mates on Thursday, with the Dutchman in contention to make his debut this weekend in the FA Cup.

The 23-year-old officially joined the Reds on New Year’s Day after his move from PSV Eindhoven for an initial £35m, having impressed at the World Cup as he scored in all three of Netherlands’ group-stage matches.

Gakpo was unable to train with the squad in the build-up to Liverpool’s match with Brentford and was not involved as Jurgen Klopp’s side fell to another defeat. The Reds have now failed to win more than half of their Premier League matches this season.

With Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota still out with injury, Gakpo’s arrival is a much-needed boost for the club and he is expected to make his first appearance against Wolves on Saturday.

Liverpool host Julen Lopetegui’s side at Anfield in the third-round of the FA Cup, as they get their defence of the competition underway.

As was also the case in the Carabao Cup, Liverpool met Chelsea in the final last season and got the better of the Blues on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes at Wembley.

Gakpo should at the very least make his debut off the bench against Wolves, before a likely Premier League bow a week later when Liverpool travel to face Brighton.
