Pierce Charles has Sky Sports pundits purring over his performance against Premier League outfit
it has been a memorable couple of weeks for Northern Ireland international Pierce Charles. After impressing on his senior international debut the teenage goalkeeper was named Player of the Match in Sheffield Wednesday's penalty shootout defeat to Brentford in the Carabao Cup.
Charles is yet to make his league debut for the Owls but has featured in all three cup games this season. Tuesday night's trip to the Gtech Community Stadium was the biggest test yet for the 19-year-old and he didn't disappoint against the Premier League opposition.
Charles made four vital saves to keep the Championship side in the game, which finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. Brentford prevailed 5-4 in the penalty shootout but the young 'keeper had certainly made a big impression as he finished with the most touches of any Wednesday player (54), as well as the most accurate passes (22).

Sky Sports pundit Curtis Davies was suitably impressed by the Northern Ireland international as he named him Player of the Match. He said: “Excellent. A lot of the saves he made, you expect him to make. But it was just his manner throughout the whole game.
“He gets his body behind it so well. And all game, just the comfortability on the ball, his confidence just oozed from him. I thought it was a really impressive, really all-round performance, and for me he was the Player of the Match.”
The high praise for Charles will come as no surprise for Northern Ireland fans who were suitably impressed by the teen in the Nations League double-header earlier this month.
Charles kept a clean sheet away in Belarus before shutting out Bulgaria in the 5-0 win at Windsor Park three days later. Charles oozed confidence and wowed fans with his superb distribution.
The 19-year-old certainly seems to have a very bright future ahead of him and this has been backed by his club skipper Barry Bannan. “He’s got the world at his feet," he said. “It’s just about him keep working hard and progressing, and I’m sure he’ll have a bright future.”
