Chelsea are on the verge of announcing the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – but the Blues have had to let a star move the other way to get a deal over the line.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is desperate to add more attacking options to his ranks with Chelsea looking toothless so far this season. The departures of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner back to their former teams has left Tuchel short. Indeed, with Kai Havertz leading the line, the German is yet to score in his five outings so far this season.

As such, the Blues have honed in on Aubameyang. The Gabon striker only moved to Barcelona in January, and has impressed in his brief time there.

Indeed, he has scored 13 times in 24 appearances for Xavi Hernandez’s side. However, the summer signing of Robert Lewandowski has seen Aubameyang drop down the pecking order at the Nou Camp.

And with the club still looking to reduce their overheads, the 33-year-old is seen as a player they can move on.

As such, talks between the two clubs over a deal has been going on for some time. The Blues have reportedly agreed an initial two-year deal for the striker, with the option of a third year.

And personal terms were also agreed on a deal to bring him back to the Premier League.

However, talks have become complicated in recent days with Aubameyang suffering a broken jaw injury. The issue – suffered after a horrific violent burglary on his home – leaves Aubameyang facing several weeks on the sidelines. More worrying for the player is that he no longer feels safe in his home.

As such talks accelerated between all parties on Wednesday, only for another hurdle to emerge.

Chelsea agree finer terms of Aubameyang transfer

The Blues were reportedly willing to pay £15m for the 33-year-old, though Barcelona were holding out for nearer £25m.

As a compromise, Barcelona asked Chelsea to sacrifice Marcos Alonso as a makeweight in the deal. That was initially blocked by Chelsea, with the player still part of Tuchel’s plans.

However, the Blues have had a change of heart and have now agreed to Barca’s request.

As per David Ornstein, they will pay Barcelona £6.5m, with Alonso moving to the Nou Camp as part of the package.

The move is reportedly moving at a rapid pace with the two clubs closing on announcements.

As such, it’s anticipated that both Aubameyang and Alonso will finalise their move well before the 11pm deadline.

Aubameyang will, when fit, give Chelsea’s attack much more of an obvious focal point. He has an excellent record in front of goal wherever he has played and is a proven Premier League marksman.

Alonso, meanwhile, departs Stamford Bridge after six years at the club.

His contract is due to expire next summer and talks over an extension have not been agreed.

Chelsea are well stocked for left-back options though with Marc Cucurella signing over the summer. The Spaniard will compete with Ben Chilwell for a place in the side.

The Blues, meanwhile, continue to push for Edson Alvarez, who is the subject of a £43m approach from Todd Boehly.
