Piers Morgan and his family were robbed while they slept at their rented villa in the south of France, it has been revealed.

The Good Morning Britain presenter’s wife Celia Walden has written of her heartbreak that a ring Morgan bought her as a wedding anniversary gift was among the jewellery and other items stolen.

Walden, 44, revealed in The Daily Telegraph that she woke up at 6.15am on the last day of their holiday to find “the place was a mess. My handbag was upside-down on the sofa, the box I keep my jewellery in lying empty beside it.”

She went on: “Then I remembered something that made me feel sick: the up-turned handbag found in the sitting room had originally been on a chair in our bedroom. They must have crept in there and stood inches away from us while we slept."

Morgan, 55, and Walden were staying at the rented property with their eight-year-old daughter Elise, and Morgan’s three sons from his first marriage, Spencer, Stanley and Bertie.

Walden believed the thieves had fled the crime scene just minutes before she got up after hearing her press snooze on her alarm, as she found a trail of loose change and membership cards dropped from her purse.

She also wrote of her, “stomach-plummeting sense of violation at the actions of these depraved and despicable inhuman beings”.

Walden confessed: "The jewellery part did sting. It still stings now, almost a week on. They're just things,' I keep telling myself, and they are just things, but they're also memories that have been trampled over.

"The art deco ring my husband had bought me for our fifth wedding anniversary; the vintage Pucci cuff I'd picked up a flea market in LA.”

Morgan and his family arrived at the villa at the end of July after he began his summer break from ITV breakfast show Good Morning Britain.

They had planned to stay longer, but were forced to fly home early last week after the government announced France would be added to the countries on its quarantine list due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Morgan shared a picture of himself at the airport with his sons, wearing facemasks, captioned “Quarantine dodgers”. They raced home in order to avoid having to self-isolate for two weeks before they could return to work.

The robbery was the latest in a series of mishaps for Morgan during his break as injured a tendon in his right leg just two days into the holiday and ended up on crutches.

During his time in France, Morgan has been sharing plenty of holiday spam on Instagram, bragging of his boozy and lavish meals with showbiz pals Dame Joan Collins and Amanda Holden.
