PIF's 'good to great' Newcastle United ploy still stands as Eddie Howe plans ahead

Newcastle United's mission in the transfer market remains unchanged despite 16 of the Magpies' Premier League rivals voting to stop huge sponsorship deals being poured into Eddie Howe's transfer kitty.

The club's PIF owners have a massive portfolio of commercial partners that could have resulted in the likes of Riyadh Air and Arab Bank striking lucrative deals. However, with Newcastle's financial chief Simon Capper hinting at more projects like STACK - which is helping pump cash into Howe's recruitment funds - the Toon boss knows that he must get creative.

When being told that rival Premier League clubs had voted for rules that tighten the restraints on benefiting from bumper sponsorship deals, Howe was asked if the result of the meeting in London was deemed a setback, and said: "Yeah, that is for other people to consider, for me I have to make the football decisions based around the rules that are set, no doubt this will have a knock on effect potentially for us and we will have to navigate in other areas."

Friday's vote came soon after Manchester City thought they'd beaten the Premier League in court after they had lucrative deals with Etihad blocked earlier this year. APT rules were formed by the Premier League to stop clubs from benefiting from sponsorship deals with companies linked to their owners which are thought to be above "fair market value".

A Premier League statement read: "The purpose of the APT rules is to ensure clubs are not able to benefit from commercial deals or reductions in costs that are not at fair market value by virtue of relationships with associated parties."

Giving more insight into PIF's plans, sporting director Paul Mitchell said "The message I gave the players when I came into the building was it was about going from good to great. We have super high ambitions.

"We have super high ambitions in terms of ownership and super high in terms of directorship and a super ambitious coach. I think with these fans in particular deserve success and that has to be the primary objective so we have to move forward and have to be aggressive."

However, Newcastle will have to box clever in the transfer market and potentially wheel and deal with some sales. Their profit making abilities have increased since the takeover with the club making £250.3m in revenue.

Club chiefs vowed to spend whatever revenue is made off the field on new players in front of 2,000 fans at the STACK on Wednesday night.
