West Ham are reportedly ‘moving forward’ in their talks to sign Piotr Zielinski from Napoli, although a serious stumbling block is on the horizon.

West Ham have shown ambition in the summer transfer window, bringing in four senior players for a total of around £88million. Nayef Aguerd, Alphonse Areola and Flynn Downes have all gone to the London Stadium.

Italy striker Gianluca Scamacca is the most recent arrival. He has joined West Ham on a five-year contract after David Moyes’ side agreed a £35.5million deal with Sassuolo.

His signing finally ends the club’s 18-month search for a new striker to compete with Michail Antonio. The Irons sold Sebastien Haller to Ajax in January 2021 and have had several unsuccessful centre-forward pursuits since then.

Despite going big on the likes of Aguerd and Scamacca, West Ham want to land a high-quality central attacking midfielder as well.

With this in mind, they have begun discussions with Napoli over Poland international Zielinski.

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, these negotiations are ‘moving forward’. Napoli are already looking at potential replacements for Zielinski, should he leave for West Ham. One player they have in mind is Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso.

West Ham have been told to pay in the region of £33m to sign Zielinski. And club chiefs have been expected to do this due to him being a top target.

But Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth provides a rather negative update on West Ham’s transfer hopes.

He states the east London outfit are ‘unlikely’ to complete the move as there is a big gap in valuations. West Ham clearly feel Napoli want way too much for the 28-year-old playmaker.

It is now looking like Zielinski will remain at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. This means he can continue playing in the Champions League, too.

Sheth claims West Ham are now setting their sights on alternative attacking midfielders. However, he doesn’t name which ones are on their radar.

Transfers are an incredibly fluid situation involving plenty of changes in direction. It is hard to know which one of these reporters is correct and ultimately where Zielinski will end up.

Perhaps Pedulla’s update focused on the previous day of negotiations, and they have taken a downturn since then.

West Ham are not in desperate need for a new central attacking midfielder. But Moyes clearly wants a new addition there to improve his team’s chances of getting back into the top six.

The need for a new attacker could become more pressing if Jarrod Bowen leaves. According to one journalist, a London rival has made an enquiry about him.
