Pique, who was shown a straight red card early in the second half of the match at the Camp Nou, appeared to have been harshly sent off following a tangle with opponent Miguel de las Cuevas on the edge of the box.
His reaction to the press afterwards only exacerbated the situation, with Barcelona’s appeal against an automatic one-match ban for the dismissal rejected by the Spanish Football Federation, who had been notified of an official complaint by the referees’ technical committee.
After Barcelona made their case to the Competition Committee, federal court members Alfredo Florez, Enrique Arnado and Lucas Osorio accepted that the player meant no harm by his comments, that he did not intend to question the integrity of referees and that his rant was made in frustration.
While the Committee accepted that such statements were permitted under freedom of expression, Pique was however warned as to his future conduct regarding comments on referees.
The Committee is expected to confirm the warning in writing by sending a letter to Pique next week.
