Pirates return 11 players for 2024 campaign

Mar. 22—GREENSBURG — The Pirates are coming off a 10-12 season on the diamond in 2023. Players and coaches went to work in the offseason to strive to improve that mark in 2024.

"We have had a productive offseason with a lot of consistency in regards to players showing up. We are looking to have roughly 28 players in the program this year, making up our two teams which we are happy about," Coach Alex Meyer said.

Experience is a key factor for the Pirates with Greensburg returning 11 players that saw varsity action a year ago.

"We are returning 11 players from last year's team that saw varsity playing time at some point, with eight of those being varsity regulars last year. In particular, 2-way player Caleb Greiwe is looking to continue upon his season last year. He is a junior this year and was our lead-off hitter a season ago. He hit .373 for us out of the lead off spot and also contributed 30 innings on the mound," Coach Meyer said.

"We also return junior Lance Coy who had a breakout season on the mound last year, leading us with 45 innings pitched. Bryson Kelso is another player we hope to continue to get better. Last year, he was able to play any position on the field as well as throw strikes on the mound when needed. He was our go to reliever last year out of the bullpen and also was a great contributor in the lineup," Coach Meyer added.

Justin Adkins is another senior looking to continue to take another big step forward this year, coming off a season where he batted .343. Coach Meyer said Adkins got better as the season went on on the mound.

Seniors Leland Workman and Gavin Owens look to contribute this season again behind the plate and in the field.

"These are two guys with a lot of varsity experience that will be needed for us to reach the next level," Coach Meyer said.

Another key returnee will be junior Cy Miller, a 2-year starter patrolling the outfield for the Pirates.

Greensburg also has a key loss to overcome.

"One key loss for us this year is that junior returnee Joey Everroad (2-year varsity starter) is going to miss this season due to a knee injury. He was a middle of the lineup bat for us and one of the best hitters in conference a year ago," Coach Meyer added.

The Pirates are adding a freshman class that went 22-1 last year at the junior high level.

"We are looking forward to what they bring to the program this year and watching them grow and help the varsity team at some point," Coach Meyer said.

"Our goals for this year would be to be more competitive than we were last year. We are returning a great number of players with a ton of experience at the varsity level. We are hoping to take that next big step this year and compete in conference as well as the post season tournament," Coach Meyer added. "The loss of Everroad is a huge hit to our lineup, but we are excited about the players we have coming back as well as some of the new players who are stepping in. We feel like we should be good defensively and should be able to run the bases well to put pressure on other teams this year."

Greensburg opens the season at Lawrenceburg Monday.
