It looked as though gold was well out of the Olympic bronze medallists reach in Chaux-Neuve, France, after the ski jump with the 21-year-old ranked down in 22nd.

But a second-fastest cross-country time of 21:24.6 minutes was enough to propel Pittin to gold.

France’s Lamy Chappuis was therefore forced to settle for silver for the second straight World Cup event, with Germany’s Fabian Riessle finishing third.

Despite Pittin winning the last two events, he still finds himself 202 points behind runaway leader Lamy Chappuis who sits pretty at the top of the pile on 750.

Japan’s Akito Watabe was nowhere near the podium in France but he held on to third overall with a seventh-place finish.
