Former England captain Michael Vaughan cited an example from county cricket in England that suggested that the pitches in England need to be improved. As many as five County teams were bundled out for less than 150 which led Vaughan to the conclusion.

Currently, England has a weak batting order that’s completely dependent on Joe Root to deliver almost every innings. Against good bowling line-ups, this doesn’t work and as a result, the English side has been exposed.

Suggesting the preparation of better pitches in order to nurture Test match level batsmen, Vaughan expects the ECB to do better starting at the domestic level.

5 County teams bowled out for under 150 today !!!! It’s fine saying we need more 4 day cricket but we have to play on better pitches to prepare Test match standard players .. It’s not good for Bowlers or Batters .. Pitches need to be better .. RANT OVER ..” Vaughan wrote on his Twitter account.

Vaughan’s ‘rant’ comes on the back of England’s recent performance against India at home. The majority of batsmen have failed to get going and apart from Joe Root, none of them have scored a century.

“Anything over 300 feels too many” – Michael Vaughan on a possible target for India in Oval Test

The fourth Test is ongoing between England and India at The Oval. India was in pole position at Lunch on Day 4, with a lead of 230. Since the track is pretty flat, a score around 250 would be chasable for the hosts, as per Vaughan.

250 feels like a number that should be chased on this deck … anything over 300 feels too many…” Vaughan mentioned.

Around drinks break in the Tea session, India had inched closer to a 300-run lead with Shardul Thakur and Rishabh Pant stitching a match-winning 50-run partnership. The duo looked set to take India to a safe total from where they can defend.
