Plymouth-born Harry McGlinchey has been named as the Republic of Ireland Men's Under-17 International Player of the Year.

The 16-year-old left-back is a Plymouth Argyle academy product who signed for Chelsea during the 2021/22 season and is now part of their under-18s squad.

The 34th Football Association of Ireland International Awards ceremony took place at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin yesterday, ahead of the UEFA Nations League game against Finland which the Irish won 1-0, with Argyle assistant head coach Pete Shuttleworth part of their backroom staff.

The teenage Chelsea left-back is the son of former Argyle defender Brian McGlinchey, who played for the club between 2000 and 2003 and now often works in a media role for Argyle TV or BBC Radio Devon. They both attended the Pilgrims' 3-3 draw with Preston North End at Home Park late last month.

McGlinchey is currently away with the Republic of Ireland's under-18s squad for three games in Croatia, the first of which was a 2-0 defeat by Japan in Porec on Wednesday. He played the whole of the game.

The Irish will play Croatia tomorrow lunchtime before taking on Portugal on Tuesday as the matches are used to prepare for the 2025/26 UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying campaign.

McGlinchey has already played for the Republic of Ireland at under-19 level. He was a substitute in a 2-1 defeat by France and played the full match when they beat Kazakhstan 3-1, with both games being part of the Slovenia Cup tournament in September.
