Pochettino identifies four summer signings at Chelsea, declares ‘admiration’ for five current stars
Mauricio Pochettino has already talked to Chelsea owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali about four potential new signings, according to reports.
The Blues have had a season to forget in Boehly and Eghbali’s first full campaign of ownership with the Premier League club currently on their third manager.
Graham Potter, who replaced Thomas Tuchel in September, was sacked at the beginning of April after winning just 12 of his 31 matches in charge of Chelsea.
Frank Lampard is currently in charge until the end of the season with the Chelsea legend only winning one of his eight matches at the helm.
Chelsea sit 11th in the Premier League table with a top-half finish now impossible, despite Lampard’s side having three matches left to play, and widespread reports yesterday have confirmed that former Tottenham boss Pochettino will take over in the summer.
In The Independent‘s report confirming Pochettino has ‘agreed terms’ to take over at Chelsea insists that the Argentine has ‘reached the point where he is discussing prospective summer transfers, with the club looking for a striker, No 6 and goalkeeper to complete a best XI’.
With the Chelsea co-owners spending around £600m on new transfers over the last two transfer windows, Pochettino’s first job is to trim their huge squad.
The ex-Spurs and Paris Saint-Germain manager has ‘made clear his admiration for energetic players such as Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Enzo Fernandez, Wesley Fofana and Mason Mount’.
On summer incomings, The Independent add: ‘Of those potentially being signed, Declan Rice, Emiliano Martinez, Alexis Mac Allister and of course Harry Kane have been discussed. Pochettino will also seek talks with Romelu Lukaku, who is currently on loan at Inter Milan.’
Tottenham striker Kane is likely to leave north London this summer, with Manchester United also linked, or sign a new contract – but former Newcastle United and Crystal Palace winger Darren Ambrose can “envisage him” joining Pochettino at Chelsea.
Ambrose said on talkSPORT: “I think it’s his last season, last few games at Spurs. When there was talk of Mauricio Pochettino coming to Spurs I said maybe Harry Kane could sign a contract at Spurs, because we know the relationship they have got.
“But he’s on the verge of signing for Chelsea I now can’t say he definitely won’t go there. He has a very good relationship, we all know that. He loves Mauricio Pochettino.
“I can envisage him going there, I can, I can see that being a club he would go to, I can see him staying in London as well.”
