Pochettino tells Chelsea to make £30m ‘instant signing’ of ex-Liverpool star in own contract talks
Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly given Chelsea the green light to make a summer move for former Liverpool striker Sadio Mane during his own contract negotiations at the club.
Pochettino is said to have verbally agreed to take over at Stamford Bridge with talks ongoing over the finer points of his deal to take permanent charge of the club in the summer.
Among the topics in those talks has been the current state of the squad and the additions that need to be made, with a new striker top of that list.
Hamstrung by Financial Fair Play having spent £600m this season, it’s thought the very top tier strikers like Victor Osimhen – who’s linked with a £133m move to Paris Saint-Germain – are beyond them.
And Football Insider claim those financial constraints could instead see them move for Mane, who’s enjoyed a less than successful time of it since moving to Bayern Munich from Liverpool in the summer.
The 31-year-old has 12 goals and five assists in 35 appearances across all competitions but his strike against Mainz on April 22 was his first since the end of October, with his struggles on the pitch boiling over off it.
Following Bayern’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City in the Champions League last month, Mane reportedly punched teammate Leroy Sane in the face, which led to him being suspended for one game.
Despite Sane and Mane making amends, Bayern are reportedly looking to get rid of the Senegal international at the end of the season, and Chelsea are ready to pounce on what would be an “instant deal” according to Football Insider sources after Pochettino gave his blessing.
It’s thought Chelsea could get the deal done for £30m as Bayern look to recoup what they spent on the 31-year-old a year ago.
Mane’s record in the Premier League speaks for itself, with the forward bagging 111 strikes in 263 games during spells at Liverpool and Southampton before leaving for Germany, but whether he’s the right choice for Chelsea, who appear to have a number of similar players, and another one arriving in Christopher Nkunku, is another matter.
