England are firmly in control of their World Cup qualifying group but face their toughest test in Group I when they face Poland tonight.

They will face one of the in-form players in world football in Robert Lewandowski, who will captain Poland after missing their 2-1 defeat at Wembley back in March.

Lewandowski has played six games for club and country this season and the Bayern Munich star has scored in every one.

Seven of his 10 goals this term have come for Bayern and although the striker is 33, his club put a £100million-plus valuation on him this summer in an attempt to price him out of any potential move before his contract expires in 2023.

Without Lewandowski, who was injured, Poland ran England close in their first World Cup meeting in Group I in March, losing 2-1 at Wembley only after a late Harry Maguire goal.

England, of course, have not been short of goals of their own in this international period putting four without reply past Hungary and Andorra to continue their 100 per cent record in qualifying.

Although the Poles did thump San Marino 7-1 on Sunday, the goal they conceded, after a blunder among their defence, was the first the minnows had scored in a competitive game since November 2019.
