James Maddison could join Newcastle United in a player-plus-cash deal amid claims Leicester City want to sign an experienced international star from St James’ Park.

Newcastle are pushing to make Maddison their fourth senior signing of the transfer window. Over the weekend, Eddie Howe’s team made a £40million bid for him.

This was unsuccessful as Leicester are holding out for his full £60m valuation. An offer at this amount would see the Foxes ‘cash in’ on their attacking midfielder.

Reports on Monday claim Newcastle have sent a second bid, worth £50m, to Leicester as they aim to get Maddison’s signing over the line.

Amid all the transfer rumours, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers said: “He [Maddison] is really pivotal for us. There is no way I would want to sell him.

“£40m bid? I think it might just cover three quarters of his left leg.”

Rodgers is clearly unwilling to negotiate an exit for one of his star players. But with Leicester yet to bring in any new players this summer, Leicester chiefs could sanction a departure to fund their own transfer pursuits.

Craig Hope of the Daily Mail now states Leicester have shown an interest in taking Martin Dubravka to the King Power.

Newcastle aim to reduce James Maddison price

Hope doesn’t think a swap deal is either club’s priority right now. However, he says this could change as negotiations continue.

Including Dubravka in the deal for Maddison would make sense for all parties. For Newcastle, it would prevent them from having to part with £60m outright for the 25-year-old.

Leicester, meanwhile, will need a new goalkeeper if club legend Kasper Schmeichel moves on. The Dane is a target for French outfit Nice.

Bringing Dubravka in would immediately solve Leicester’s keeper problem. Rodgers has Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen in the squad but clearly doesn’t feel they can be reliable for a full campaign.

With regards to the player, Dubravka would probably welcome a move to the East Midlands. He will face reduced game time if he stays at Newcastle after Nick Pope’s arrival from Burnley.

The Slovakia international, who has won 29 caps so far, wants to be a Premier League number one and he will get this if he agrees to join the Foxes.

transfermarkt value Dubravka at £3.6m. Due to this, he wouldn’t take much off the £60m Leicester want for Maddison. But it would still be a slight transfer saving for the Magpies.

Meanwhile, a pundit believes going to Newcastle would be a ‘step up’ for Maddison, despite them finishing behind Leicester last season.
