Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet thinks Man Utd youngster Facundo Pellistri should leave Man Utd to get more playing time.
The 20-year-old moved to the Red Devils from Uruguay giants Penarol in 2020 in a deal worth around €10m but is yet to play regular football at Old Trafford.
Pellistri has spent the last 18 months on loan at Alaves before returning to Man Utd in the summer and is now part of the first-team squad under Erik ten Hag for the 2022/23 campaign.
He was named in United’s 25-man Europa League squad for the group matches, after picking up an injury in pre-season, but Pellistri wasn’t fit enough to make the squad for their match against Real Sociedad on Thursday.
It is unlikely that the youngster will play a key role at Man Utd this season and former Uruguay international Poyet has urged his compatriot to look for more game time elsewhere.
Poyet told Midnite: “Yes, Pellistri will struggle to get game time. It would be good for him to go somewhere and play, because the World Cup is around the corner and he is very important for the Uruguay team because the coach [Diego Alonso] has lots of faith in his ability, he’s a proper winger.
“He needs to find a place to play, like Luis Suarez who is playing at Nacional week in week out, training with the first team and getting game time three months before the World Cup, Pellistri should do something similar.”
Man Utd have recovered well in recent weeks after a terrible start to the season that saw them lose their first two Premier League matches under Ten Hag to Brighton and Brentford.
Four wins in a row has seen them rise to fifth in the standings but former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson reckons they will just miss out of the top four this season.
“It’s still early doors, but I think the Premier League top four this season will be Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in whatever order,” Merson wrote in his Sportskeeda column.
“Chelsea will obviously have a thing or two to say, but we’ll have to wait and see how [Graham] Potter performs at Stamford Bridge.
“As for Manchester United, I don’t think they’ll make it because they still have a lot of work to do in terms of their squad. They’ve won four league games in a row, including victories against Liverpool and Arsenal, but I’m yet to be convinced by them.
“Arsenal are good and I believe they are in there for the long run, while I’m still backing Liverpool to turn it around in the coming weeks to secure a UEFA Champions League spot.”
