PREMIER LEAGUE: It's official - Chelsea are English football's biggest underachievers

It's official: Chelsea are currently the biggest underachievers in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho's side have taken just eight points from their opening eight matches and have conceded 17 goals - better only than second-bottom Newcastle.

And based on summer spending compared to league standing, they are 13 places below where they should be, taking them to the bottom of the table, according to the latest reports from Switzerlan-based the CIES Football Observatory.

The Blues shelled out more than £67m on players in the close season, bring in the likes of Pedro (£21m) and Baba Rahman (£17m) to name but two, making them the third highest spenders behind Manchester City and Manchester United.

Their current 16th place standing in the table is a 13-place disparity, sealing their fate at the bottom.

Top of the table are Leicester City, currently fifth in the table but the 17th-biggest spenders in the Premier League.

That 12-place disparity puts them ahead of Crystal Palace, currently fourth and the 13th highest spenders in the transfer window.

Watford, Norwich and Bournemouth complete the top five.
