Ryan Mason scores a wonder goal then gets carried off as Spurs claim a first win of the season at the Stadium of Light

PREMIER LEAGUE: Sunderland 0 Tottenham 1

Ryan Mason grabbed a wonder goal as Spurs finally secured a Premier League win.

Starting the move 45 yards from goal, Mason exchanged passes with Erik Lamela and Harry Kane before being put through by Lamela to finish calmly in the 82nd minute.

Mason nudged the ball past Costel Pantilimon but was clattered by the Sunderland keeper as he did so and was stretchered off with a knee injury.

Seconds later Jack Rodwell almost levelled for Sunderland but saw his shot clatter back off the bar.

Tottenham had ridden their luck in a one-sided first half during which their old boy Jermain Defoe stole the show.

Former White Hart Lane favourite Defoe hit the post, tested Hugo Lloris and had a good case for a penalty as he had five efforts on goal.

Kane wasted a great chance to put Spurs ahead on 67 minutes when he volleyed wide from six yards as the Londoners improved after the break and they should have increased their lead as Sunderland fell away.
