Premier League announces new VAR addition for Everton and Liverpool matches
The Premier League has announced they have started a new social media account to provide clarity over VAR decisions across the course of the season. The Premier League Match Centre (@PLMatchCentre on X) will provide fans with live updates from Stockley Park on decisions being made during matchdays in the top flight.
The objective for the new account is to avoid confusion during matches regarding the reasoning for decisions being made. Explaining the concept on its launch, the account wrote: "This page will provide live updates from Stockley Park including information directly from the VAR Hub.
"We will issue near-live updates on operational matters from all matches – including clarification on refereeing and VAR. Refereeing and VAR clarifications will be based on the factual information from the VAR Hub and the Premier League Match Centre.
"Where necessary, additional information on Laws of the Game and VAR process from PGMOL experts will be communicated. This account is open for all supporters to follow with the aim of increasing transparency around VAR and officiating in the Premier League."
Last season, the PGMOL's head Howard Webb appeared on a semi-regular show which talked through big VAR decisions from the past few weeks of Premier League games. While this was a step towards further transparency, the programme's critics claimed the show dodged some more controversial decisions which were evidently wrong.
At the end of last season, Wolverhampton Wanderers proposed the notion at the Premier League AGM of scrapping VAR but 19 of their fellow clubs - including Liverpool and Everton - voted against this action. Referee Keith Stroud will be assisted by Stuart Attwell on VAR duty for the Reds' clash with Ipswich Town on Saturday lunchtime with Darren England at Stockley Park later that day for the Blues' home clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.
