Premier League: Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka interviewed by police after accusation of racial abuse

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has been interviewed by police regarding an allegation of racial abuse at Heathrow Airport.

The 24-year-old, who was sent off in the Gunners’ victory over Burnley at the weekend, was questioned under caution in west London.

Xhaka, according to the Daily Telegraph, is alleged to have been involved in angry confrontation with a member of staff on Monday night.

He is reported to have racially abused the airport worker in German after his friend was prevented from boarding a flight after arriving too late to board.

Xhaka denies the allegation while Arsenal refused to comment when approached by the national newspaper.

A Metropolitan Police statement read: “Police were called at 19:29hrs on Monday, 23 January following an allegation that a member of staff had been racially abused at Heathrow Airport, Terminal Five.

“The allegation was made by a third party. “Officers attended and spoke with a man in his 20s. He was not arrested. He voluntarily attended a west London police station where he was interviewed under caution.

Police confirmed enquires are continuing into the incident.
