Diego Costa scored on his Premier League debut as Chelsea beat Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor.

The Clarets memorably beat Manchester United in their first home game of the 2009-10 season, and Burnley fans would have been hoping for a similar result when Scott Arfield scored the opener after 14 minutes.

But Costa, a £32m summer signing from Atletico Madrid, took just 17 minutes to register his first goal for Chelsea, as Jose Mourinho’s side came from behind to beat the Premier League new boys.

The Spain striker’s debut was overshadowed by another summer signing from La Liga, as former Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas dominated in midfield and had a hand in all three Chelsea goals, with Andre Schuerrle and Branislav Ivanovic also on target in 20 whirlwind first-half minutes.

Chelsea manager Mourinho opted for Thibaut Courtois over Petr Cech in goal, and the Belgian repaid the faith with an assured debut and a brilliant save at the start of the second half to deny Arfield a second goal.

14' - GOAL! Burnley 1-0 Chelsea: Scott Arfield controls the ball on the edge of the box after a Taylor dink back into the area, and slams the ball past Courtois.

17' - GOAL! Burnley 1-1 Chelsea: Fabregas sets up Ivanovic down the right with a backheel, the cross evades everyone and hits the post, and poacher Diego Costa slams the loose ball past Heaton.

21' - GOAL! Burnley 1-2 Chelsea: What a goal. Fabregas with a lovely one-touch pass to set up Schuerrle to score at the back post with a low half-volley.

29' - CONTROVERSY! Referee Oliver books Costa for diving as he and Heaton compete for the ball following a poor Ben Mee backpass. That was a bad decision, because Heaton did clip the Spain striker.

34' - GOAL! Burnley 1-3 Chelsea: Burnley concede another corner, and Ivanovic volleys home Fabregas' deep corner to make it Burnley 1-3 Chelsea.

49' - GREAT SAVE! Arfield cuts inside Terry in the box but Courtois brilliantly palms away the goalbound shot.

Keeper conundrum: Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made a big decision by opting to pick Thibaut Courtois over Petr Cech as his goalkeeper at Turf Moor. The Portuguese insists that Courtois is not yet his first-choice goalkeeper, but the Belgian produced an assured performance and looked very comfortable. Don’t expect to see Cech back between the sticks anytime soon.

Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea): Just 90 minutes into his career at Chelsea, and the Spaniard already looks a good bet for PFA Player of the Year. The 27-year-old had a hand in all three goals, and his volleyed pass to set up Andre Schuerrle will be replayed again and again.
