Chelsea kicked off their pre-season in the most comfortable manner as they breezed to victory with a 5-0 win over lowly Wycombe.

Jose Mourinho’s youthful side controlled the entirety of the match against League 2 opposition. Retaining the ball for a near-two minute spell from kick-off, the Blues set the tone of the match early on and kept Gareth Ainsworth’s men constantly on the back foot.

Though Chelsea saw much of the ball in the opening period, only one clear-cut opportunity was created and the visiting side capitalised to take the lead.

Full-back Nathan Ake skipped down the left flank before crossing from the byline to put the ball into the path of the onrushing Patrick Bamford.

Youngster Bamford, who netted eight times for Derby whilst on loan for the latter part of last season, took his chance superbly, firing a left-footed effort past the stranded Matt Ingram.

Mourinho introduced a number of senior players for the second period including John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic and Nemanja Matic. The experience showed as Chelsea carved open their opponents time and time again, notching four more goals in the process.

After just a few second-half minutes Izzy Brown smashed home from close range before Terry capitalised on some poor Wycombe defending to convert Jeremie Boga’s corner.

Another Boga set-piece later allowed for Ivanovic to nip in front of the onrushing Ingram in the Wycombe net to add Chelsea’s fourth.

The rout was sealed with just three minutes remaining as Brown notched his second of the game with an unstoppable, curling effort from 20 yards.

21’ – GOAL! Wycombe 0-1 Chelsea. Bamford puts the hosts ahead with a lovely left-footed finish from 12 yards. Ake does particularly well on the left, keeping the ball in play - but only just - to cross for Bamford who finishes with aplomb.

48’ - GOAL! Wycombe 0-2 Chelsea. Brown scores for Chelsea. A tremendous ball over the top into Da Silva allows the full-back to burst towards the byline. Da Silva pulls the ball back into the path of Brown who wallops the ball home from 10 yards. Simple.

52’ - GOAL! Wycombe 0-3 Chelsea. Chelsea score their third of the match. Boga's corner from the right is whipped into the near post where Terry is waiting to prod home. Poor defending, but a nice finish from JT.

64’ - GREAT CHANCE FOR CHELSEA! Another set-piece is poorly defended which allows for Chelsea captain Terry to prod the ball back into play from the byline. Ivanovic is the closes to it but smashes the ball over the bar from six yards.

67’ - GOAL! Wycombe 0-4 Chelsea. It's four. Boga's set-piece is whipped onto the penalty spot. Ingram races off his line to punch clear but gets nowhere near the ball, allowing for Ivanovic to head into an empty net.

87’ - GOAL! Wycombe 0-5 Chelsea. WHAT A GOAL. Brown nets once more. The 16-year-old former West Brom player pulls away on the edge of the penalty area, receiving the ball from Solanke to bend a gorgeous effort into the far corner. Ingram rooted.

Do Chelsea have the strength in depth to mount a serious title challenge? Jose Mourinho made 11 second-half changes, and although the opposition wasn’t up to much the Blues looked very strong in all areas of the pitch. The emergence of youngsters such as Izzy Brown and Jeremie Boga, who may well be sent out on loan, only add strength to Mourinho’s already-impressive squad. The additions of Filipe Luis, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa speak volumes. Expect Chelsea to fight to the very end this season.
