Fluke or goal of the season contender?

Yet this weekend the 33-year-old pulled off a piece of skill that would leave even Lionel Messi green with envy.

When a ball was headed towards him into the box in the 69th minute of the Latics' clash with Swansea, Boyce seemed unable to have any chance of making something happen with his back to goal.

But to the shock of the 20,000 people at the Liberty Stadium - and in all likelihood to the shock of himself - he managed to guide the ball into the top corner with an astonishing audacious backwards flick.

Yet before Swansea goalie Michel Vorm had even begun to pick the ball out of the back of his net, the debate began: was this a miraculous piece of skill from a player with a decade of experience at the top level?

Or was it a brainless fluke by a player who has scored just 17 goals in 14 years as a professional footballer?
