Premier League HOT or NOT

What’s sexy, and not sexy, in football this week…

HOT

Riyad Mahrez
Jamie Vardy’s fizzing, dipping 30-yard wondergoal against Liverpool was pretty good, but you could argue that his team-mate’s 50-yard pass to set him up was equally impressive. Falling directly into the Leicester striker’s stride and sitting up perfectly to be hit, Vardy couldn’t miss from there really. Mahrez continues to dazzle in the Foxes midfield with his ingenuity, consistency and devastating end product. Whenever you think his form might be dropping, he comes back with something even better. In that sense he personifies his club’s season - and both reached new heights in the 2-0 win against the Reds.

Aaron Lennon
There weren’t too many jealous rival fans when Everton snapped up the forgotten Tottenham winger in August, and even fewer when he spent the first few months of the season being kept out of the team by Gerard Deulofeu and Arouna Kone. But Lennon has quietly nipped ahead of both in the pecking order in recent weeks, and his goal-scoring display in the 3-0 win against Newcastle was his most effective yet. It was 10 years ago that Lennon made his England debut, which is probably why many people forget he is still just 28. On current evidence, he still has plenty to offer.

Wahbi Khazri
Big number nine, solid defenders, midfield grafter, accurate set piece taker. These are the tools Sam Allardyce requires at his disposal if he’s going to save you from relegation, and in Tunisian playmaker Khazri he seems to have at least found the latter. Sunderland’s £9m signing from Bordeaux caused Manchester City’s defence incessant problems with a series of devilish corners and crosses, which explained why he is one of Europe’s top assist-getters this season. Unfortunately, Allardyce didn’t have the big number nine to tuck the chances away and the Black Cats lost 1-0, but on first glance Khazri looks like a classic Big Sam signing.

NOT

James McClean, Claudio Yacob and Andy Dawson
“What are they concocting here?” wondered the excited commentator as the West Brom trio gathered menacingly around a set piece in a dangerous position against Swansea. The answer was the most farcical free-kick routine of this, or any, season. It began with Dawson running over the ball towards the right of the penalty area, at which point McClean shaped to pass to him before Yacob suddenly gestured for him to stop. There was a moment of hesitation, then confusion and finally anger as the team-mates began arguing with each other, the ball still not having been touched. Eventually the Baggies’ three stooges trundled off and let Stephane Sessegnon take the kick instead.

Scott Dann
The Crystal Palace defender scaled the peaks and plumbed the depths of the Premier League footballer experience within the space of seven amusing minutes on Tuesday. At the beginning of those seven minutes, he was leaping jubilantly through the air after firing Wilfried Zaha’s cross into the net to put the Eagles ahead. At the end of them, he was watching haplessly as Bournemouth’s unfashionable midfielder Marc Pugh jinked past him once, then twice, before slamming home the Cherries’ equaliser. The only thing at Selhurst Park that looked sillier than Dann was Emmanuel Adebayor’s new hairband.

Jordan Ayew
If Aston Villa are going to defy all expectations and somehow avoid relegation, and it is still a distinct mathematical possibility, they need a collection of things to start going well. These include improved performances, increased confidence, better luck, more goals and less of their players getting sent off for needlessly elbowing opponents in the face 10 minutes into a game. The most frustrating thing about Ayew’s inexcusable red card for his assault on West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell was that Remi Garde’s side had previously been bossing the match. Victory against the Hammers, any chance of which was snuffed out by Ayew’s dismissal, would have made that mathematical possibility feel a lot less outlandish. But as things stand, Villa have never looked more doomed.
