Nastasic injured his ankle in Hong Kong and according to the club will be "sidelined for four to six weeks".

The setback for the Serbian is likely to force manager Manuel Pellegrini into a reshuffle at the heart of his defence, with the pairing now likely to be Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott.

With the defender out of action, speculation surrounding Manchester City's attempted signing of Real Madrid's Pepe is likely to increase, with the Portuguese cagey over his Madrid future.

Despite the setback for the City camp, they will be boosted by the news that striker Sergio Aguero is likely to be back in full training by the end of the week.

The Argentine has missed the majority of pre-season due to a knee injury but backroom staff are confident that Aguero is on the way to making a speedy recovery.
