Steven Gerrard netted his 100th Premier League goal from the penalty spot as Liverpool twice recovered from a goal down to draw 2-2 with 10-man Newcastle in a pulsating clash at St James' Park.

Yohan Cabaye sent the home fans into raptures with a dipping shot from range that flew into the far corner of the net past Simon Mignolet in the Liverpool goal and the visitors struggled to force their way back into the match initially.

But an incisive run from Luis Suarez in behind Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – who started with Fabricio Coloccini sidelined through injury – led to a penalty being awarded as the defender tugged him back on the shoulder and was promptly shown the red card.

With Newcastle down to 10 men, Gerrard stepped up and lashed home the spot kick to bring up his century of goals in the English top flight and eighth against the Magpies in the competition, restoring parity for his side in the process.

The game then took a surprise turn just before the hour mark as substitute defender, 22-year-old Paul Dummett, ghosted in at the back post and fired a crisp half-volley beyond Mignolet to restore the hosts’ lead.

Suarez was again the architect as Liverpool drew level for a second time in the match with an effortless run down the left and pinpoint delivery to present Daniel Sturridge with a simple headed finish that gave his side a share of the points in a thoroughly entertaining encounter.

PRE-MATCH: Cissokho’s first start; Cisse misses out - Aly Cissokho makes his first Premier League start for Liverpool, while right-back Glen Johnson also returns to the side; there is no place in the Newcastle side for striker Papiss Cisse or injured defender Fabricio Coloccini but Hatem Ben Arfa returns.

23’ – GOAL: Cabaye puts Newcastle in front. It's a fine effort as he drives forward from the halfway line with Liverpool players backing off, and he lets fly with a stunning effort which beats Mignolet at his far post. It's a fine start for Newcastle, and the hosts go in front. You cannot allow Cabaye to shoot from there with so much freedom.

40’ - PENALTY/RED CARD: Suarez races through on goal and gets in front of Yanga-Mbiwa, who tugs the striker back on the shoulder. He goes down and Andre Marriner immediately points to the penalty spot and sends off Yanga-Mbiwa.

42’ – GOAL: Gerrard steps up and coolly dispatches the penalty, driving the ball into the left corner of the net. Krul guesses correctly but cannot quite get across to the effort from the Liverpool skipper, who has now scored 100 Premier League goals. Was there really any doubt over that one? Liverpool are back level.

56’ – GOAL: Paul Dummett, the substitute defender, races in at the back post to stab a clinical finish beyond Mignolet, and Newcastle are in front! It's a precise finish on the half-volley as a deep delivery comes over and he celebrates wildly. He's yet to make a Premier League start but he could be the hero.

72’ – GOAL: Liverpool are back level as Sturridge heads home from close range after a brilliant run from Suarez down the left. The visitors are back on terms, and it's the hottest partnership in the Premier League that ensures it once more. Suarez did all the hard work and all Sturridge had to do was stoop and head home from a yard out.

TALKING POINT: What about Newcastle’s ambition then? That was the question posed by the hundreds of supporters who protested in the streets before the match at the state of the club under Mike Ashley. One of the main issues cited by the Time 4 Change group was the perceived lack of ambition shown by the club in the transfer market.

Each of Newcastle United’s last 13 Premier League goals have now been scored by Frenchmen.

There have now been 39 Premier League games between Newcastle and Liverpool without a 0-0. No fixture has had more games and no goalless draws.

Gerrard has now scored 100 goals in the Premier League. He has now netted eight goals in the Premier League against Newcastle; only against Aston Villa (11) has he scored more.

Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle): In addition to producing the inspired effort for the opening goal, Cabaye dictated Newcastle's use of the ball with only 10 men throughout the second half and helped his side to an important point.
