Wolfsburg to trump Arsenal for Gustavo: The Guardian claims Bundesliga side Wolfsburg have moved to beat Arsenal to the signature of Bayern Munich's Luiz Gustavo. The paper cites reports in Germany which claim Wolfsburg have agreed a £17 million deal with the European champions for the highly-rated defensive midfielder. With Arsene Wenger refusing to go higher than the £14m he values the player at, Wolfsburg have seized the initiative, the report states.

Paper Round's view: Oh dear. This could be a huge blow for Wenger, who has only managed to capture Yaya Sanogo so far this summer, despite promises of big-name signings. While Gustavo may want to stay in Germany, it's something of a mystery why he would opt to go to a club that finished 11th in the Bundesliga last season over a move to a Champions League club. Money? If so, Wenger needs to dig deep and pay the player what he wants. Otherwise, the Frenchman runs the risk of a huge backlash.

Dzeko not for sale: Manchester City are ready to tell Arsenal their striker Edin Dzeko is not for sale, reports the Daily Mail. The big Bosnian had emerged as a back-up target for the Gunners given the Luis Suarez situation, but he has impressed new City boss Manuel Pellegrini, who now has no intention of allowing him to leave.

Paper Round's view: Another potential kick in the teeth for Wenger. The nightmare scenario of having to start the new season without a new striker could well become a reality. That said, as the report states, a huge cash offer may yet tempt Pellegrini to part ways with Dzeko. Again, time for Wenger to dig deep.

Arsenal line up one final offer for Suarez: The Gunners have not quite given up hope of signing Suarez, the Daily Telegraph reports, with one final bid of £49m being considered. This follows "another day of confusion" during which Suarez was forced to refute comments attributed to him by a Uruguayan paper that indicated he wanted to stay at Anfield. The Times, meanwhile, reports that Suarez is set to sit down and talk with Brendan Rodgers in the next 24 hours, with the Liverpool boss set to ask for clarity on the latest developments.

Paper Round's view: Oh please, just make it stop. All this despite Suarez issuing a blanket ban on all transfer talk while he was away on international duty this week. It's probably best to see what comes out of any meeting between player and manager.

United prepare final Fabregas offer: Manchester United have not yet admitted defeat in their pursuit of Cesc Fabregas and are lining up a final £40m bid for the Barcelona midfielder. A report in the Daily Telegraph claims that David Moyes and senior figures at Old Trafford remain convinced that Fabregas continues to harbour doubts over his first-team prospects at the Nou Camp, despite having pledged his allegiance to the Catalan club in no uncertain terms last week.

Paper Round's view: If United are indeed peeved at Chelsea's mildly aggressive pursuit of Wayne Rooney, why would they resort to similar tactics over Fabregas? The midfielder said he is “very happy at Barcelona” and United stated they “completely respect everything Cesc has said”. It's either a serious case of double standards (which, in fairness, should not be ruled out) or this report is simply not true.

United interested in Eto'o: Manchester United are interested in signing Samuel Eto'o, according to the Daily Mirror. The Anzhi Makhachakla striker has said he would like to join Chelsea after the Russian side's owner decided put his entire first team squad up for sale, but "sources close to the player" now claim United have joined the race to sign him. Napoli and Internazionale are the other interested parties.

Paper Round's view: Eto'o has made it clear that he wants a reunion with Jose Mourinho and this story smells of an attempt by the Cameroon international to scare Chelsea into striking a quick deal with him. And it's difficult to see why United would want him, given their stance on Rooney.

Spurs pursue Lamela: Tottenham are eyeing a swoop for Roma striker Erik Lamela, with a fee of £20m reported by the Daily Telegraph. Spurs have already brought in Soldado, Paulinho and Nacer Chadli, and are on the verge of sealing a deal for Étienne Capoue, this summer but are keen to continue spending to strengthen their squad.

Paper Round's view: How are Spurs going to afford another £20m outlay during what has already been a rather cavalier summer? Well, it rather suggests that a mega-deal for Gareth Bale will go through before too long.
