Wenger to splash £14m on Bayern's Luiz Gustavo: Could Arsenal finally be ready to make a major signing this summer? The Mail on Sunday reports that Arsene Wenger will attempt to finalise the purchase of Bayern Munich and Brazil midfielder Luiz Gustavo this week. He missed Bayern’s opening match of the season on Saturday and has confirmed the Gunners want him.

Paper Round’s view: Bayern want to sell, Gustavo isn’t playing and Arsenal need more of a presence at the base of midfield. This transfer makes sense for all parties concerned; expect it to go through before the close of the window.

Tottenham plot Luis Suarez swoop: Arsenal are known to be in hot pursuit of Luis Suarez but according to the Sunday People, their North London rivals are also keen. The paper explains that when Gareth Bale completes his move to Real Madrid, Spurs will attempt to “hijack” Suarez’s move to Arsenal with a huge bid of their own, even if the fact Tottenham are not in the Champions League means the striker would rather play in Arsenal red next season.

Paper Round’s view: The People’s story contains the disclaimer that Spurs are not in the Champions League, making this deal extremely unlikely. Add to that the fact that John W Henry has made perfectly clear he does not want to strengthen Liverpool’s rivals and you have an impasse. Isn’t going to happen.

Spurs eye double swoop for Ajax pair: It is not just Suarez who is a target for Andre Villas-Boas, according to the Sunday Mirror, with Ajax pair Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld both on the agenda. The paper reports that a £15 million double bid has been launched for the Danish playmaker and Belgian defender, both of whom are out of contract next summer. Liverpool had been leading the chase but Spurs could be a more attractive proposition.

Paper Round’s view: Alderweireld and Eriksen are regular names in this column and will surely move to the Premier League this summer. Tottenham seems a likely destination and given both players are cut-price given their contractual situations, you imagine Daniel Levy will have no problem signing off the cheque.

Manchester United up bid for Baines: Having failed with an offer of £12m for Everton defender Leighton Baines, David Moyes is set to test his former club once more with an improved approach. He feels Baines “would play a vital role” according to the Sunday Express, with Patrice Evra linked with a move to Monaco.

Paper Round’s view: Just get it done already. Baines signing for United surely became inevitable the day Moyes was appointed and there’s no need to drag it out. United should stump up the cash needed and get the England international installed ASAP.

Defoe to cost QPR £6m: He was named in the England squad this week but Jermain Defoe could be dropping down to the Championship with the Mail on Sunday suggesting a deal could be done between Spurs and Harry Redknapp’s QPR. Defoe will cost £6m but QPR owner Tony Fernandes prefers a loan arrangement – which Spurs have no interest in.

Paper Round’s view: £6m isn’t a bad price for a goalscorer of Defoe’s calibre and if Rangers are serious about getting out of the Championship at the first attempt they could do a lot worse than signing the Spurs man.
