Today's Sun and Daily Mail both claim that representatives of the sportswear brand - which handles the Real Madrid ace - flew into London for talks about the renewal of their shirt sponsorship with United.

But, The Sun claims: "Top of the agenda was talks about how they could help the club get Ronaldo".

The report goes on: "Nike is desperate to get the Portuguese star back to the biggest football club that wear their logo. They currently sponsor Ronaldo in terms of boots and sportswear but are frustrated that he runs out in an adidas shirt with Real Madrid every week."

It is thought that the former world player of the year would cost United at least £65 million, plus a player like Nani.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mirror claims the agent who brought Ronaldo to Manchester in the first place could help United land another star from Portugal.

Benfica's Argentina defender Ezequiel Garay has signed up with 'superagent' Jorge Mendes in a bid to improve his chances of securing a big-money move to the Premier League.

Nani, Anderson and Bebe were also involved with Mendes when they made their moves to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile the backtracking over the story that Wayne Rooney was to be sold in the summer continues after a furious Alex Ferguson faced the media (minus representatives from two newspapers in particular) at his Friday press conference.

Fergie used the opportunity to strongly denied the talk of any rift between him and Rooney and insist the England striker is still part of his plans.

'Kiss and make up' screams the Daily Mirror's back page headline, accompanied by a montage picture of the pair laughing together, although it beggars belief the editors could not source at least a file photo of them together in good spirits.

Across town, Roberto Mancini has refused to rule out of the possibility that Edin Dzeko could leave Manchester City in the summer, according to a report in the Independent.

The Bosnia striker has been linked with a move back to the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, although Mancini thinks Serie A might be a more plausible destination for the 26-year-old.

The Daily Mail claims that City have joined Arsenal by showing interest in AZ Alkmaar’s Adam Maher.

The Netherlands international midfielder is valued at £10m and is expected to leave the Dutch club at the end of the season.

And finally, Chelsea will sell Fernando Torres this summer and are prepared to take a £35m loss on the striker.

The Daily Express claims that Roman Abramovich has at last conceded defeat with the £50m flop, with Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala are ready to end the Spaniard’s misery.

A 'source close to Abramovich' told the paper: “Roman will now sell Torres – if he can get the right offer.”
