James Chester was the hero for Hull City as Charlie Austin missed a late penalty for Premier League new boys QPR on their return to the Premier League.

The defender beat Hoops debutant Rio Ferdinand to head Steve Bruce’s men on their way to victory on 52 minutes.

The goal scorer was then wrongly adjudged to have handballed Junior Hoilett’s cross on 83 minutes, but Austin’s tame effort from the spot was saved by Allan McGregor as the Tigers snatched all three points.

It was Harry Redknapp’s charges who bossed the opening 45 as Steven Caulker’s effort was cleared off the line and McGregor foiled Loic Remy on the rebound as the Hoops squandered a number of chances.

Joey Barton also went close with a curling free-kick from 20 yards wide on a disappointing day back in the top flight for the Londoners.

43 - Andy Robertson clears it off the line from Steven Caulker's header and Allan McGregor springs into action to punch Loic Remy's follow up over the bar!

52 - James Chester - against the run of play - headed the Tigers into the lead! It was a good corner from the right and the defender was too strong for debutant Rio Ferdinand and nodded the visitors in front with a clever header.

85 - Charlie Austin looked calm and focused as he stepped up to take the penalty but Allan McGregor dived the right way to scramble the low, tame spot kick away, sending QPR's fans into silence.

Despite keeping the services Loic Remy, do QPR have what it takes to stay in the Premier League? Or will notorious wheeler-dealer Harry Redknapp have to delve into the club's transfer kitty to boost their chances of a second successive season in the top-flight?
