Thomas Vermaelen has not been a first-team regular at Arsenal

The Daily Telegraph first reported that the Belgian defender has already agreed to the move and now it is just left to the two clubs to try and agree on a fee.

The Times, The Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror were amongst those repeating the link, with all the papers stating that a deal is likely to be struck.

The Arsenal captain was behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the Arsenal pecking order last season, a trend that would likely continue if he stayed at the club.

He is out of contract next summer, and Arsenal would be willing to sell, although United will try and get the Gunners reported asking price of £10m-£12m down.

The Telegraph reports that new United manager Louis van Gaal has identified the 28-year-old as a perfect replacement for the likes of Rio Ferdinand (unattached) and Nemanja Vidic (Internazionale) who both left the club in the summer.

"New United manager Louis van Gaal is desperate to strengthen United’s defence and believes Vermaelen can find his best form under him," the Telegraph's report states.

"The 28-year-old has been at Arsenal for five years after signing from Dutch club Ajax. He got off to a superb start with the Gunners, but injuries curtailed his progress.

"Vermaelen earns around £70,000-a-week and it is understood he has verbally agreed a deal with United that would see him pocket around £100,000-a-week."

Vermaelen is currently in Brazil with the Belgium squad ahead of the World Cup.
