Manchester United paid the price for slack defending as Yokohama F Marinos beat them 3-2 on their pre-season tour.

Marquinhos gave the Japanese side the lead after 28 seconds after dreadful work from Fabio, and that set the tone for a disorganised display from the Premier League champions.

Youngster Jesse Lingard finished coolly to bring United level on 18 minutes following decent build-up play from Wilfried Zaha, before Masakazu Tashiro diverted an Adnan Januzaj free-kick into his own net just before the half-hour mark.

United barely deserved their lead, and Yokohama were back on terms early in the second half when Shunsuke Nakamura's deep corner was met at the far post by Fabio Aguiar, who easily outleapt a statuesque United defence.

And there was further dismal play when, three minutes from time, Jin Hanoto rode two weak challenges and set up Yoshihito Fujita for the winner.

David Moyes will care less about the result than the performance, which left much to be desired despite promising play from Januzaj and Zaha.

Most Japanese eyes were trained on Shinji Kagawa, whom the TV director somehow made the focus of attention despite his spending the first hour on the bench.

Much of the stadium missed Yokohama's second goal because it coincided with Kagawa's rapturously-applauded warm-up.

But when the playmaker did get on, he failed to make much of a positive impact, squandering a great chance to score United's third when he shot straight at Tetsuya Enomoto.
