The January transfer window is in full swing as clubs in the Premier League and beyond strive to strengthen their respective teams for the second half of a chaotic campaign.

Covid-19 is still wreaking havoc across the divisions, with sufficient squad depth more important than ever now as games are threatened and postponed on a daily basis.

While the mid-season window is not traditionally seen as an ideal time to be making significant investments, 2022 could well be an exception with plenty of intriguing storylines to monitor throughout the month.

To name but a few, there is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at Arsenal, Antonio Conte looking to kickstart a Tottenham revolution, Newcastle striving to splash the clash under their new owners to avoid relegation and Ralf Rangnick hoping to make his mark at Manchester United.

The next moves for superstars such as Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe continue to be discussed on a daily basis.

The window properly kicked into gear on Friday (January 7), with Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa pulling off a shock loan swoop for Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona and Kieran Trippier leaving Atletico Madrid to become the first signing of the new era at Newcastle.

Lucas Digne has now joined Coutinho at Villa, with Newcastle also swooping to sign striker Chris Wood from relegation rivals Burnley.
