The Ireland forward would have been looking forward to the encounter – it was his 100th appearance for the club since he arrived at the Britannia Stadium in 2010 – but he will remember the game for all the wrong reasons.
Walters nodded in two own goals in a 0-4 defeat, and to make matters worse, lumped a penalty for his side well over the crossbar when he had a chance to atone.
Compounding things further, at one stage the 29-year-old booted a ball straight into his own face.
But despite the calamities, he retained the support of manager Tony Pulis, who praised him for having the courage to step up and take the penalty.
"This football club looks after its players," Pulis said. "He doesn't have to worry at all, irrespective of what people say outside the place - the place is a good football club. We treat it as a family and Jon will be fine."
