Astonishingly considering the state his thumb was in, Courtney Lawes could yet return to make the end-of-season playoffs, should Northampton get there.

Lawes suffered a compound dislocation fracture of his left thumb as Northampton crashed out of the Challenge Cup at Gloucester, which looked at the time as though it would end his season.

Gruesome

But despite the gruesome nature of the injury, it has not been complicated to reset and heal, meaning that should his current rehab trajectory continue, he could be back within a month.

Northampton have climbed to fourth in the Premiership and look good value for a possible semi-final.

“The scan revealed there was nothing broken but obviously it was an open dislocation so he’s been stitched up with a number of stitches,” said Northampton’s incoming director of rugby Phil Dowson.

“It’s pretty early days and there’s nothing broken. There’s ligament damage, tendon damage, bits and pieces like that… he looks a bit like Frankenstein’s Monster! So a weird injury, but he’s not too bad.”

Lawes’ potential return is good news both for the Saints and for England, for both of whom he has emerged as a significant part of the leadership groups.

“It would be a massive lift for us if he’s back because he’s a very good player and that helps us,” Dowson said.

“You know that when Courtney is suited up and ready to play, you’ve got a world-class six/second row in the squad.

“His leadership style is not subdued, but fairly quiet, but you know that him being there will give confidence to a lot of the people around him.”
