Sale Sharks are looking to team up with Netflix or Amazon for a behind-the-scenes documentary to boost their profile.

The popularity of Formula 1’s ‘Drive to Survive’ has shown the power of documentary series in sports that show the inner workings of it all, and Sale is hoping to do the same.

According to the Daily Mail, Sale is looking to gain traction in the American market and has footage from the last two seasons that the club hopes to use in partnership with Netflix or Amazon, with the likes of HBO and NBC in the conversation as well.

Sale’s chief executive Sid Sutton wants to show that rugby is much more than just a game and feels like this kind of documentary can achieve that.

“What we have to do is promote rugby better and market it in a brave, innovative way. We have to humanise the players so they stand out more. I believe you can promote your stars and do it in a humble way. What better opportunity to do that than with a fly-on-the-wall documentary?” Sutton told the Mail.

“It’s not just the rugby, but also the human side and how the players put their lives on the line on the field. Rugby is a fantastic game, and there are really good people in it. They can be the ones to promote rugby to a wider audience.”

Craig Doyle from BT Sport Rugby will be involved along with Ireland legend Brian O’Driscoll through their production company, 3 Rock Productions.

Brilliant stories to be told

“If you’re going to sell rugby, why not sell the greatest domestic league in the world? That’s the Gallagher Premiership,” Doyle said. “The rugby is unbelievably good, and there are fascinating stories which are as dramatic as the sport. We want to tell the story of the league through one of its most interesting clubs.”

Meanwhile, Sale is in sublime form in the Premiership after beating Harlequins 24-16 in very wet weather on the weekend.

The win maintains their hold in second place in the table. Sale turns their attention to a massive game against Toulouse this weekend in the Champions Cup.
