Scotland will be sweating on the fitness of their prize wing Duhan van der Merwe ahead of the June Tests, after he was confirmed as having broken a rib on Wednesday.

Worcester lead consultant Steve Diamond found a novel way of explaining the injury, while also confirming the centres Francois Venter and Seb Atkinson will return for the Premiership clash against Wasps on Saturday. Wing Ashley Beck is a doubt with a knee injury.

Of Van der Merwe, Diamond gave a succinct medical appraisal of the Scottish wing’s symptoms.

“If you have never broken your rib, you don’t realise how hard it is to go to the toilet,” he said in the Worcester News.

“And at the moment he cannot use the toilet so that is the best form of knowing when you have a broken rib!”

Diamond could also shed no light on the resolution of the cancelled match between Worcester and Gloucester, upon which an independent panel from Sport Resolutions UK was due to meet Tuesday night. Diamond was still in the hearing on Wednesday, after it dragged into a second day.
