PREP ROUNDUP: Braves among top three in multiple events at swim sectional prelims

Feb. 2—Host Terre Haute South led Wabash Valley teams in the preliminary round of the IHSAA girls swimming sectional Thursday at the Vigo County Aquatic Center, placing in the top three in eight different events.

Thursday's qualifying individuals and relay teams will compete in the sectional finals Saturday at the Aquatic Center.

In the prelims, South's Lyric Irish had the top 200-yard freestyle time at 1 minute, 59.81 seconds. Irish also recorded the second-best 100-yard butterfly time at 1:00.93.

Also South's 400 freestyle relay squad of Irish, Layla Johnson, Makenzie Ingle and Demme Hancewicz had the top time at 3:49.37.

Other second-best qualifying times were delivered by Hancewicz with a 25.55-second 50-yard freestyle, and the Braves 200 freestyle relay at 1:45.63, with a squad of Irish, Mia Belfi, Johnson and Hancewicz.

Third-best qualifying times came from Ingle with a 1:06.24 in the 100-yard backstroke and a 5:37.24 in the 500-yard freestyle, and Hancewicz with a 1:10.13 in the 100 backstroke.

In Saturday's sectional finals, the diving competition will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the swimming events at 1 p.m.

Girls basketball

—Paris 60, Lawrenceville 21 — At Paris, Ill., a trio of double-figure scorers led Paris to a convincing high school victory Thursday night in the Tigers' gym.

Taylor Clark led Paris with 16 points. Teammates Graci Watson and Macy Bicknell added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Watson's total included three 3-pointers.

Paris put the game out of reach early, bolting to leads of 13-2 after the first quarter and 31-4 at halftime.

The Tigers (now 17-11 overall, 6-1 in the Little Illini Conference) play host to Mattoon at 7 p.m. Monday. Lawrenceville's records fell to 7-18 and 0-7.

Boys basketball

—South Vermillion 64, North Vermillion 36 — At Fairview Park, Aden Wallace hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points to lead the host Wildcats to a high school victory Thursday night.

Dominic Garzolini added 16 points for South Vermillion, including three 3-pointers, while Luke Bush scored 15. North Vermillion was led by Ryder Mikel's nine points.

The Wildcats built a 24-12 first-quarter lead and were up 37-19 at halftime.

South Vermillion (10-8 overall, 3-1 in the Wabash River Conference) plays host to Attica on Feb. 9. North Vermillion (10-9, 1-3) plays host to Riverton Parke on Feb. 9.

—Clay City 59, Shakamak 46 — At Clay City, the host Eels picked up their 14th victory of the season, downing the Lakers in Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference play Thursday.

Clay City (now 14-4 overall, 4-2 in the SWIAC) plays 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at North Central. Shakamak dropped to 8-9 and 2-3, and plays host to White River Valley at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
