PREP WRESTLING: Shaw wins sectional title

Feb. 11—Danville's Phillip Shaw IV is returning to the IHSA Class 2A wrestling tournament and he is going to do it in style.

Shaw (33-1) won the 175-pound sectional title on Saturday at Mahomet-Seymour High School with a 11-4 decision of Normal Community's Gus Schreiber. Before that, Shaw had first-round bye, pinned Waterloo's Jackson Deutch (2:30) in the quarterfinals and Chatham-Glenwood's Justin Hay 7-0 in the semifinals.

Shaw's teammate Ty Rangel (25-9) is also going to state in the 132 class by taking third. Rangel beat Troy Triad's Brody Smith 7-0 for third after winning a consolation semifinal against Springfield Southeast's Brayden McBride 11-3.

In Class 1A, Oakwood/Salt Fork was able to advance seven wrestlers to the State Farm Center. Brayden Edwards (113) and Dalton Brown (175) were able to take second, while Pedro Rangel (132), Grant Brewer (150), Bryson Capansky (157) and Jamison Chambliss (190) each took third and Steven Uden (106) took fourth.

Westville/Georgetown-Ridge Farm advanced one wrestlers in Gabriel Kiddoo, who took fourth at 165.

At a 1A sectional in Stanford Olympia, Hoopeston Area's Angel Zamora won the 175-pound title. He won by pin over Knoxville's Brydon Walters in the quarterfinals in 2:23, El Paso-Gridley's Dominic Ricconi in 31 seconds and Unity's Thayden Root in 3:47.

Teammate Ayden Larkin battled through the consolation round at 157 and was able to advance with a fourth-place finish.

The wrestlers that advanced will start action at the IHSA wrestling tournament on Thursday.
